The University of Florida Manages Complex Printing Demands with Barr Enterprise Print Server

PDF Version (79 KB)

UF With more than 42,000 students enrolled for classes, the University of Florida (UF) ranks as the sixth largest university in the United States. UF's diverse campus, with more than 100 colleges, schools, centers, and institutes, produces a complex matrix of print data distribution and management. To help manage this print demand, the university turned to Barr Enterprise Print Server—the latest Windows NT-based print management solution from Barr Systems. This print server enables each organization to receive and manage data from multiple sources and print to multiple destinations.

To manage mainframe printing and connectivity, UF's College of Medicine and the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS), each installed the BARR/NJE module for the Barr Enterprise Print Server. Mainframes use Network Job Entry (NJE) to exchange data in a peer-to-peer networking environment which provides a secure connection to the mainframe. In this case, BARR/NJE provides System Administrators at IFAS access to more than 200 header information fields on each job. These fields allow them to perform specific tasks such as automatically routing jobs.

UFBARR/PRINT TCP/IP, a common module installed at UF, enables the Barr Enterprise Print Server to receive print output from hosts via an Intranet or a TCP/IP network. A complete TCP/IP print solution, this module provides the print server with information fields such as destination printer names, origination name, job name, title, and user name. This information can be used as criteria to route the job to its final destination.

The BARR/PRINT390 module, also used by the university, enables a channel-connected printer to be one of those final destinations. All input streams available to the Barr Enterprise Print Server can be distributed to S/390 channel-attached printers via BARR/PRINT390.

UF exemplifies the way that the Barr Enterprise Print Server modules work to offer a complete solution to meet any organization's complex needs.
