Barr Systems' IPDS Printing Solution Provides an Easy Switch to Network IPDS Printing

Gainesville,Fla.–Barr Systems announces its newest solution for Intelligent Printer Data Stream (IPDS) printers. BARR/PRINT CHANNEL for IPDS provides an easy way to switch from channel-attached IPDS printers to network-attached IPDS printers without making significant changes to the host. It connects to the mainframe via ESCON® or Bus & Tag, emulating channel-attached IPDS printers. This improved connectivity solution enables the host’s Printer Service Facility (PSF) to communicate directly to the remote IPDS printer via an IP socket.

With BARR/PRINT CHANNEL for IPDS, organizations can expand their printing options so that the host reaches network printers, such as Xerox, IBM and OCE IPDS printers, in addition to existing channel printers. TCP/IP printing support becomes available without the time and expense of changing the way the mainframe works.

This Barr solution also allows customers to replace more expensive channel extension equipment, which is used to support remote printers, by placing a channel connection directly into the mainframe with BARR/PRINT CHANNEL for IPDS. The Barr Enterprise Print Server module, BARR/PRINT390 for IPDS over IP then serves as a companion product at the remote site, which receives the data over TCP/IP and directs print files to channel-attached IPDS printers.
