Barr Systems Introduces its BARR/NJE Module - The First PC-Based NJE Communications System
Gainesville,Fla.-Barr Systems premiered the first PC-based Network Job Entry (NJE) communications system on November 10, at the Xplor International 19th Global Conference in Nashville. BARR/NJE is an enhancement module for Barr's newest printing solution, the Barr Enterprise Print Server.
Thousands of companies, for many years, have been using Barr's Remote Job Entry product, BARR/RJE, for printing and file transfer from the mainframe to the PC. Barr Systems has developed an exciting new option: The BARR/NJE module provides more control, more security, and more connection options than any RJE product on the market today.
While nearly 80 percent of mission-critical business applications continue to reside on mainframes, most corporations have multiple computing platforms interconnected via local and wide area networks. This mixture of computer systems presents difficulties in developing printing and file transfer solutions that integrate the processing power of the mainframe with the distributed computing environment. The BARR/NJE module solves these problems.
As with the reliable BARR/RJE, the BARR/NJE module, which must be added to the Barr Enterprise Print Server, provides file transfer to and from mainframes and prints data from mainframes on parallel, serial, network-attached, and S/390 channel-attached printers. Because NJE is designed for sending information from one mainframe computing system to another, BARR/NJE receives and uses a more powerful set of information for managing data. This is data that the Barr Enterprise Print Server can use for both routing and accounting purposes.
Existing RJE workstations can be easily replaced with the new NJE application. The BARR/NJE functions as a client to Microsoft SNA Server or IBM Communications Server for Windows NT gateways, or via channel-to-channel. The gateway communication link may be a synchronous line, LAN, WAN, or channel-attached communication controller. This means that corporations will not have to replace their existing communications infrastructure.
BARR/NJE is more secure and easier to setup than RJE. The connection between two NJE nodes can require a password. With the hardwired connections presumed in RJE, such security features were rarely required. Also, setting up an NJE node such as BARR/NJE requires very little configuration on the mainframe when compared to establishing an RJE workstation.
