Host / Mainframe Printing
Host / Mainframe Printing: Overview
Mainframes and host-based applications continue to generate vast amounts of mission critical print files. Decades ago, all the printing was being done right there, at the host, using channel-attached printers. Today, the same print files need to reach an array of destinations, including networked production printers, distributed printers, multi-function devices, data warehouses, web users, email, etc.
Host / Mainframe Printing: Challenges
There are numerous challenges associated with the distribution of host printing. The most common we have encountered were related to connectivity, security, print stream conversion, and control. Yet, the biggest overall challenge is achieving the desired functionality without having to make any changes on the mainframe.
Host / Mainframe Printing: Barr Systems' Solutions
We have the industry's most complete suite of solutions to address host printing needs. Most of these solutions were built upon two major principles:
The first statement is fairly obvious. The second reflects our belief that the mainframe has better uses than performing conversions from one print stream to another or distributing the print to tens or hundreds of destinations. The purchase and maintenance cost associated with such host-based solutions is unnecessarily high. Furthermore, the necessity of restricting general users from accessing the host means that many users are frustrated over the lack of control over what gets printed and when. We built products that off-load all the work securely and efficiently to the familiar Windows platform, and also provide a secure point of control at the remote end.
Here are our main Host / Mainframe Printing solutions:
Distribute Mainframe Print
Enable Remote Production Printers
Convert Legacy Print Files
