Documents generated by drivers and applications come in a variety of Page Description Languages (PDLs), such as AFP, PCL, Postscript, PDF, LCDS, XPS, etc. In some cases, the destination for a document is not compatible with its original PDL. Examples include printing an AFP document on a PCL network printer, printing a PCL document on a printer that only supports PS, posting on the web a PDF version of a LCDS document, etc.
Barr EOM’s powerful PDL transformation capabilities can enable the scenarios above and much more. Administrators can use the full set of conditions available in Business Rules to specify which documents to convert to which PDLs. Additionally, there are many specific characteristics that can be configured for the resulting documents. Administrators can also control what happens to the original documents – whether they are deleted, moved to retain, or printed on a parallel path.
Two transformation packages can be licenser with Barr EOM. The network print transformation package includes support for conversions to and from PCL, Postscript, PDF, Text, and Raster Images. The production print transformation package provides an a la carte menu of PDLs for input and output. Here is a chart that summarizes available PDLs.
