A Technological Eye on Criminal Behavior

The surveillance cameras at Big Y, a Massachusetts grocery chain, are not just passively recording customers and staff. They're studying checkout lines for signs of "sweethearting." That's when cashiers use subtle tricks to pass free goods to friends: obscuring the bar code, slipping an item behind the scanner, passing two items at a time but charging for one. [More...]

SEEING GREEN

Black and White and Green All Over:

Soy-Based Printer Toner

Could soybeans provide printer toner that's more environmentally friendly than traditional petroleum-based toner? Companies like PRC Technologies say it can be done, and the resulting product is cheaper than regular toner and performs just as well. Kingpins of the computer printer industry like HP and Lexmark, which make a great deal of their profits from toner and ink sales, have reservations about quality.

Every time you print out a page on a laser printer you're using toner made from petroleum-based products. Now there's a greener choice that shows promise: a toner product derived from soybean oil. [More...]

Barr Campus

From the Desk of Gabriel Schwartzman, CEO Barr Systems, LLC

The recent and rapid changes in information management over the past several years have caused many companies to search for ways to remain current. Our economy has created a tremendous amount of pressure to reduce costs while still keeping up with these changing requirements. At Barr Systems, we have spent almost four years rethinking our future and what we can do to better serve the needs of our customers. We have been working closely with our customers and partners to formulate the foundational architecture for our new suite of products.

I am happy to announce that Barr Systems has adopted a new business model for developing and supporting our products and services. We have named our new business philosophy I/Omation ™. As you learn more about Barr Systems, our products, and our services, you will gain an understanding of what I/Omation means to us, and, ultimately, how it will benefit you.

BarrEOMname_48.pngBarr EOM is our first product designed and developed within the I/Omation guidelines for integration, modularity, scalability, and cost effectiveness. It is a single-level expandable platform for office print, distributed and centralized production print, and electronic document delivery. We built Barr EOM to help reduce printing and distribution costs by as much as 40%; to simplify complex output-management workflows; and to speed up the delivery of mission-critical information. Barr EOM is a scalable product that will grow along with your business. It is as useful to an organization with a few dozen printers as it is to a multinational corporation with tens of thousands of output devices.

One of the guiding principles of I/Omation is communication. That principal is supported by this newsletter. Every month, this newsletter will provide you with more specific information about Barr Systems, the output management industry, and other topics of interest.

We look forward to your feedback and suggestions for both this newsletter and future Barr product and service offerings. Your input is very valuable to us and we encourage you to contact us at any time to discuss your ideas and suggestions.

This month, we compare the Override Tables provided in our BEPS product to the robust Business Rules Engine designed into Barr EOM.

Override Table in BEPS
vs.
Business Rules in Barr EOM

We have received many questions from customers interested in migrating from the Barr Enterprise Print Server (BEPS) to Barr EOM, our new, fully integrated, output management suite based on I/Omation. Customers who have made extensive use of the Override Table in BEPS wonder how they will accomplish those same tasks when they implement Barr EOM.
