Consolidate Data Center and Corporate Printing
The ClientA financial services company with more than $50 billion in assets and clients in more than 90 countries |
||
Background
Our client had two distinct print centers. At their data center they used high speed continuous feed printers (AFP/IPDS) to produce both client correspondence and mainframe reports. At their corporate print center, they used three cut sheet printers (PCL) to produce internal reports, marketing collateral, and various types of print jobs with high copy counts.
Goal
During the past few years, they had been watching the page counts drop in the data center print operations as more of their clients opted for electronic correspondence options. While the print volume was dropping, they knew they would have to continue to print and mail client correspondence for the foreseeable future. If they could merge the data center operations into the corporate print center, they would save hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Requirements
- Provide a single print spooling / management system to handle both the data center print jobs and the corporate print jobs.
- Capture print files from both the remote mainframe and the corporate network.
- Convert AFP into PCL and reengineer the documents to make the switch from the continuous feed devices to the cut sheet printers.
Solution
Using Barr EOM to consolidate their data center and corporate print operations, the Financial Services Company has been able to eliminate their continuous feed devices and shift their entire printing operations to their corporate print center.

For the data center workflow, Barr EOM connects to the mainframe and downloads the AFP print files. Then, it runs them through the transformation and modification modules to produce PCL files. During this process, Barr EOM shifts page elements to ensure items line up correctly on the cut sheet devices.
For the corporate print, the employees submit large print jobs directly to Barr EOM via the web. When they submit the print jobs they provide the instructions (copy counts, stapling, etc) for how the job should be produced. Barr EOM also monitors the Windows Print Servers to look for large print files that were sent to inappropriate printers. Instead of allowing a 1,000 page print job to print on a low speed network printer, Barr EOM automatically sends the print job to the corporate print center. It notifies the operators of the new print jobs as well as the person who tried to print it.
Barr EOM consolidates the data center print jobs and the documents coming from the corporate office into a single management system. It has made life easier for the operators as they now have a single solution to manage multiple workflows and printers. It also helps to ensure that their corporate documents are sent to the most appropriate printer. Most importantly, it has allowed our client to save lots of money by eliminating their continuous feed printers.
